Every 8 hours.

Where does the star growth come from?

Two places, and the page labels which is which. 'GitHub trending data' is the growth figure GitHub itself publishes on its trending pages.

How is this different from github.com/trending?

GitHub's trending page is a single snapshot with no history. GitHub Trend keeps the history: growth sparklines, an all-time board, bilingual summaries, and browsing by programming language or domain.
